Overview:

This is a call to all out there that would be interested in an opportunity to do the Share part of the Connect/Share/Learn mantra of PASS (SQL Server Professional Community).

For the June 2017 Wichita SQL Server User Group meeting, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 27th from 6-8PM, we'd like to run a round of "Lightning Talk" sessions. Each speaker will be given 15 minutes to share on a topic they're comfortable with in an effort to promote more local speaking and knowledge share on the SQL Server platform.

You know there's something everyone comes to you for at work, right?? Well, put together a short slide-deck and some notes and come present it in a "safe place".  We're a community of like-minded professionals and anyone can learn from anyone else.  It's just 15 minutes and you can make some tremendous connections, both personal and career wise by simply sharing what you know.

If you're at all interested, contact Patrick Purviance via email ASAP so we can get you all the details/requirements.

As always, thanks for helping build a local SQL Server community in Wichita!

Come and network with other database professionals (DBAs, Analysts, BI Specialists, and Developers just like you)!

 Agenda:
- Eat Pizza
- Introductions
- Session Presentation
- SQL Server discussions, Q/A

All you need to do is show up and participate.

There's no substitute for experience or the shared wisdom of others to help you learn what mistakes to avoid. In this session, Tim will share with you a ton of what he's learned over the years from working and consulting at multiple Fortune-level companies. You'll hear about real-world environments he has worked on where there was a high impact from administrators making mistakes in how SQL Server was configured and administered. You'll learn many proven and accepted best practices for installing, configuring and supporting SQL Server to help your environment run as smoothly as possible and you'll leave with a checklist of items to take home to make sure your SQL Server environment is configured properly.

Overview:

If you are involved with BI projects, or are going to get involved with BI projects, you should know the following Gartner statistic: Over 70% of BI projects fail to meet the enterprises’ objectives. But, does it have to be that way? Why do BI projects fail? Why does it seem that BI projects are always running over budget? How can you control that budget without making the customer feel like you are cutting all of the things they care about?
In this session, we will explore the secrets to successful BI projects and how the best BI professionals use these secrets for a 100% success rate. No complex formulas or third party software, but simply techniques that can be immediately applied to your current BI projects. These techniques can be applied to Kimball Warehouses, Power Pivot proof-of-concepts, Tableau projects, Data Science (Azure ML) projects, and other BI projects in between.

Whether you are a DBA, a developer, or an analyst, there is a good chance that you will have to create reports for coworkers, company executives, or clients. As with any UI design, careful consideration should be given to your data visualization design to ensure you are effectively communicating the intended message and providing a good user experience. While the principles are applicable across reporting platforms and tools, this session will contain demos and examples implemented in Reporting Services using SQL Server Data Tools. Learn how to make information (not just data) the focus of your report and provide your audience with something better than just shiny!

The NetApp SSMS Storage Explorer Plug-in extends the out-of-box SSMS functions, to give the database administrator insight into the NetApp E-Series storage subsystem and provide feedback of the proper functioning of that storage.  It is integrated into Microsoft’s SQL Server Management Studio and provides a general storage view to the DBA to see mapped LUNs to volumes on the storage system drilling all the way down to the disk level.  The plugin is also multi-instance aware and cluster aware.  The DBA can view the properties of the storage at multiple levels and can view performance metrics graphs.
